Pick-up, Drop-Off, Traffic and Visitors

John L. Golden Elementary is a secure campus school. Our safety protocols provide parents and staff with the peace of mind that all of our gates are secure at all times. This means gates will be closed during the day as well as before and after school and that all adults on campus have checked into the office with the appropriate identification and have a purpose for being on campus.

Golden has many different family members/caregivers transporting students to and from school. We ask all people visiting our campus to have patience and set good examples for our students.

We greatly thank you for your support in creating a safe campus for your student(s).

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures

1st-5th Grade ARRIVAL:

  • Before school, students will be dropped off on the east side of campus and enter campus through the MPR.

  • Students will be supervised in the MPR from 7:45-8:00 and will be gradually released to the playground by grade level.

  • Students will set their backpacks in their class line and will either participate in the Walking Program or chat with their friends.

  • At 8:10, students will line up in their class lines and teachers will take them to class.

  • The MPR doors will close at 8:15. However, if a student is not in his/her seat at 8:15, he/she will be marked late or tardy.

1st-5th grade DISMISSAL:

  • Our campus exit points will allow students to exit. Parents, middle school students, and guests will wait outside the gates and wait for students to exit. Please do not crowd our gates so students may exit easily.

  • 1st grade students and siblings of 1st grade students will be picked up in front of the MPR. All 1st grade teachers will walk their students out to this area to meet parents. If you arrive early and your child is not ready, you may be asked to circle around and get back in line. We will do our best to make sure students are ready to go and released on time.

  • 2nd grade through 5th grade students will exit and be picked up at the front of the school. Students will wait in their assigned grade-level area until they are picked up. Students not picked up on time, will be brought to the office where families will need to present an ID to pick them up.

  • Please remind your student to leave class immediately and walk to the pick-up area so their car is not waiting. Students will be reminded to always watch for their car attentively with their items ready to go.

WALKING TO CAMPUS ROUTES

  • Please walk with your student(s) on the sidewalk and use our crosswalks. We ask you to please not walk through our parking lot or cross our traffic lines on campus as it is not marked and clear for pedestrians.

CHILD CARE

  • Students are required to report to child care right after school for check in. If your student is in an After School Program (chorus, student council, garden club, E3 programs, Intramural physical education), please remind your student(s) to report to child care before going to an after school program each day.

HANDICAP PARKING

  • Our handicap parking is available to our families that are exiting their vehicle with the person the placard is issued for. We have quite a few students with disabilities and parents that require a handicap placard. Thank you for being courteous to them.

KEEPING CLEAR FOR OUR SPECIAL NEEDS BUS PICK-UP

  • Please do not park in front of the school, between the office and the park, after 2:00 p.m. This is our loading bus zone for our special needs students. Once the sign is removed, the cars waiting in the parent line may pull up to fill that space.

Additional Reminders About General School Procedures

WHEN DO YOU NEED TO COMPLETE THE VOLUNTEER PROCESS?

  • The volunteer packet is required to be completed before you enter campus. This can be for special events, library access before/after school, lunch visitation and general volunteering. We highly recommend every person that thinks they will come onto campus for anything, fully complete the volunteer process at the beginning of the school year. The packet is available in the school office. The person completing the packet must turn it into the school office with a valid identification card to complete the process. We utilize the State of California’s Megan’s Law website to assist in our process.

VOLUNTEER/VISITOR PROCEDURES

  • Each volunteer will sign in at the front desk and will be given a volunteer badge to enter campus. Please wear your volunteer badge while on our campus so staff can identify you as a helping parent.

  • When leaving, parents are required to leave through the office and sign out. Please do not exit through our school gates. All school gates should only be opened and closed by school staff.

COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR STUDENT'S TEACHER

  • Golden staff believes in the importance of having good teacher-parent communication. Parents may email their child’s teacher or call the school. If you call during instructional hours, we will provide the teacher with a message slip. We always recommend setting up an appointment with your teacher since they have duties/meetings on campus. If you have an urgent message, please contact the school so we can assist getting a message through quickly.

LIBRARY ACCESS

  • Golden believes in the power of books and our community accessing our lovely library. Parents are welcome to accompany their students to the library before and after school. Please remember to have a Volunteer Packet filled out.

    • Before school: Monday- Friday 7:50-8:10 a.m.

      • Students may return books, check out new books, take AR quizzes (2nd-5th) or work on assignments.

    • After school: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday (no Mondays and Thursdays) 2:45-3:45

      • Students may return books, check out new books, take AR quizzes (2nd-5th) or work on assignments.

    • Lunch recess: Students may go to the library during their lunch recess for circulation of books and AR quizzes after receiving a hallway pass from our lunch proctor.

    • We have a great Library link on our school website with resources.

LUNCH VISITORS

  • If you would like to have lunch with your child for a special occasion, please make sure you have completed the volunteer process and check into the office. This will give you access to the MPR and playground during your child’s lunchtime.

IF YOU FORGET AN ITEM IN THE CLASSROOM OR AT SCHOOL

  • If you come back before 3:15, we will contact the teacher’s classroom to see if he/she is in there to get the item. If the teacher is unavailable or it is after 3:15, you will have to get the item tomorrow. (Another staff member will not open the classroom.)

DROPPING OFF AN ITEM LATE TO SCHOOL

  • Because we honor instructional minutes, we will not interrupt instruction if an item is dropped off late to school. We will attempt to contact the teacher through email. It is helpful if the student remembers to come to the office on their recess or lunch break if they realize they have left something at home to see if the item is there.
