Philanthropy

John L. Golden Elementary takes pride in not only creating intelligent citizens but developing generous and compassionate leaders. Through various philanthropic events, our Golden stars have an opportunity to help make our world a better place to be. There are so many great causes for everyone to rally around. These are just some of the ones we can help with.

Treats For Our Troops

October

From late October to beginning November, Golden students are asked to donate any unwanted Halloween candy to a great cause- our soldiers overseas! Students simply bring the candy in a Ziplock bag to their classroom, or in its original bag. We ask chocolate candy be separated from others and pixy sticks not be added. What a great way to put a smile on a soldier's face!

Wear PINK to Support the Fight Against Breast Cancer

October

In the month of October, students and staff wear PINK on Wednesdays to show their support for all those affected by breast cancer.

Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive

November

This philanthropy experience supports the Foothill Family Shelter who serves the homeless and low-income families from Upland, Ontario, Montclair, Rancho Cucamonga, and Pomona. Families donate food items so each class can create a food basket. To promote generosity and empathy within our students, classes participating are taught why the baskets are put together and help in the making of the basket.

Macy's Believe Campaign

December

In December each year, Macy's initiates its annual Believe program where they will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for every letter to Santa they receive up until Christmas. They will do this up to $1,000,000!

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes for seriously ill or terminally ill children up to the age of 18. Since the average cost of each wish is $5000, Macy's can help 200 children fulfill their wish! Golden can help!

The letters can be submitted online directly to Macy's, or hard copies can be submitted to the school office and will be dropped off at Macy's.

Everyone can write letters! Parents, grandparents, teachers, siblings. Please stress to the children to only put their first names and NO ADDRESSES. These actually do get read and sent to New York.

*Philanthropy Hint: Stress to students to ask for something that benefits others as well as something for themselves.

Pennies For Pasta

February

Pennies for Pasta supports The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Student Series campaign that helps to fund the therapies and treatments that help save lives of blood cancer patients. Each class competes to raise funds with Olive Garden and Golden Elementary sponsoring a pizza party for the class that generates the highest donation amount from each division: TK/K/1, 2/3 & 4/5.

In the past, Golden Elementary was the sixth-ranked school in the Southern California Chapter - which is the largest chapter in the Society! The generosity of this community continually astounds us!

Submit your online donations here. Don't forget to type in your teacher's name in the field box so your class gets the credit.
